Several of the buildings at Walkersville Southern Railroad have an important role in the history of Walkersville, MD. In fact, without the railroad, the town probably would not even exist. The businesses that grew right beside the railroad prospered and provided local merchants and townspeople an avenue for sales of their products and opportunities for employment. The station/depot, our ticket office, was built in about 1880 and served as a ticket office and railway “post office”. The tool shed behind the station was headquarters for track maintenance workers and their equipment. Our museum building housed Walkersville Ice and Power Company, part of a larger building complex along the tracks that no longer exists. Our enginehouse was a wood storage building for the Farmers Supply Company that sold grain, coal and wood products. Most notable of the structures along the existing track are the lime kiln, the Harmony Grove location, and the bridges over the Monocacy River and Tuscarora Creek. You can visit our museum to learn more about all of these structures.
