2020 Regular Excursion Schedule

The railroad operates regular trains on weekends from May through October, RAIN or SHINE! 


Our passenger cars are handicapped accessible, but with limited space for wheelchairs. Please call ahead to ensure seating.


All day trip excursions are approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Schedules are subject to change without notice. Although every effort will be made to operate on schedule, the Walkersville Southern Railroad is not liable for delays and reserves the right to alter its schedule and/or equipment as necessary.

Visit with the Bunny on the train who will give each child an Easter gift.

Opening Day  - May 2 - 11 AM and 2 PM

Vintage engines on display all day.  Ride on our regular excursions at 11am and 2pm.  Enjoy Train videos in the museum. Adults $14, Seniors $12, Children 3 -12  $10, 2 and under Free when riding on a lap. Reservations

Steam returns to WSRR!  Experience the exciting sights, smells and sounds of steam for three weekends beginning May 16th!   Ride behind a real 90-year-old, coal-fired steam locomotive, the restored Jeddo Coal Co. #85 (aka MACK). Be sure to have your camera ready for some memorable photos.  We'll have two open flat cars behind the steamer, plus two enclosed cars and a caboose.  Departures at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM each day.   Note that you may not want to wear your Sunday best because the steam locomotive can shower a little coal dust and water at times.   Daytime excursions (1 hour and 10 minutes)

Enjoy the unique "Hand on the Throttle" opportunity inside a coal-fired Steam Locomotive with one of our experienced engineers. You must be 18 years of age, possess a valid driver's license , wear closed-toed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. We recommend you also wear eye and ear protection, gloves and a hat. Tickets are $125 for 30-minutes. Space is limited, and reservations are required.  Advance reservations are required.

We are also offering one Railfan Special on Saturday evening, May 23, from 5 to 7:30 PM.  Ride behind the locomotive, plus travel on track north of Walkersville towards Woodsboro. This popular event gives railroad enthusiasts and passengers the opportunity to photograph the train in rare locations. Price for the Railfan Special is $30 per ticket. Reservations

Jesse James and his gang are on the loose.  Expect an Old West raid on the train.  We'll supply the loot for the robbery, and be aware that there will be the sound of gunfire.  Reservations


Civil War Reenactors - May 30- 11 AM, 1 and 3 PM (Steam train Fares)
September 19  - 11 AM and 2 PM (Regular train Fares)

Union and Confederate reenactors on the train and in the bushes trackside.  Caution!
There will be the sound of gunfire with skirmishes along the line and a mock battle at the park. Reservations


Father's Day Special - Sunday, June 21 - 11 AM and 2 PM

Celebrate Father's Day with a relaxing train ride departing at 11am and 2pm.
Adults $14, Seniors $12, Children 3 -12  $10, 2 and under Free when riding on a lap. Reservations


Autism Friendly Summertime Excursions - Saturday, June 27 and July 25- 4 PM

This new event is geared specifically for our Autism spectrum and Sensory processing disorder friends in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Seating is not assigned, but can be chosen at your leisure in any of our two open air cars, three passenger cars and caboose. There will be the sound of the train whistle at crossings. Reservations are not required, but are available. The ride is 1 hour and 10 minutes, Rain or Shine. This sensory-friendly event is closed to the general public and exclusive to those on the autism spectrum and similar needs.

Star-Spangled Fireworks Special - Friday, July 3 - 8 PM   RAIN DATE: July 4

Board the train for a ride and spectacular front-row view of the fireworks. Train departs at 8 PM from our station.  We'll ride to the end of the line, stop at the carnival grounds where we will get off the train to watch the fireworks at 10 PM, then take the short ride back to the station. Bring a flashlight and a blanket to sit on.   Adults $14, Seniors $12, Children 3 -12  $10, 2 and under free when riding on a lap. Reservations required. 


Super Hero Picnic - Wednesday, July 8, 22 and August 5, 19 and 26 - 11:30 AM

Come dressed as your favorite Super Hero! Train departs at 11:30 AM and returns at approximately 2 PM, with a stop in the park for BYO lunch and a Super Hero themed story time presented by the Frederick County Public Library.  Adults $14, seniors $12, children 1- 12 $10.  Reservations recommended.  RAIN or SHINE!

Teddy Bear Picnic
  Wednesday, July 15 and 29 and August 12 - 11:30 AM

Bring your favorite Teddy Bear and meet Goldilocks during the train ride! Train departs at 11:30 AM and returns at approximately 2 PM, with a stop in the park for BYO lunch and a Teddy Bear themed story time presented by the Frederick County Public Library.  Adults $14, seniors $12, children 1 - 12 $10.  Reservations recommended.  RAIN or SHINE!


Santa Trains November 28 and 29 and December 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 - 11 AM, 1 PM & 3 PM

Ride the train with Santa! Have your camera ready for some great shots as Santa will visit with each family! ASL Santa for our deaf friends: 11/28 & 29 and 12/19 & 20.  Free hot chocolate and Uncle Ralph's cookies will be served in the museum after your ride.  Adults $18, seniors $17, children one thru 12 $14.  Reservations required.
